Planning a trip to Ketama in Morocco’s Rif Mountains is an adventure in itself. Known for its dramatic landscapes, rich Amazigh culture, and unique traditions, Ketama is a destination that rewards curious and conscious travelers. But before you arrive, you’ll need to decide on something essential: which airport in Morocco should you fly into?
With several international airports spread across the country, Morocco offers many entry points. Some airports are close to Ketama, others are far away, and each comes with different travel times and transportation options. This blog post will guide you through the main airports in Morocco, explain how long it takes to reach Ketama by car, taxi, or bus, and help you choose the best option for your journey.
Ketama is nestled deep in the Rif Mountains, a beautiful but remote part of northern Morocco. Unlike Marrakech or Casablanca, it does not have its own international airport. That means travelers must arrive in another Moroccan city and continue their journey by road or domestic flight.
Your choice of airport will affect:
Tangier is one of the most convenient airports for reaching Ketama. Located on Morocco’s northern coast, it offers strong connections to many European cities. From Tangier, the drive to Ketama takes around 4 hours by car or taxi.
If you prefer public transport, buses and shared taxis are available, usually taking 5–6 hours. These routes pass through Chefchaouen, another beautiful mountain town worth a stopover.
Tangier is the perfect choice if you want a balance of flight availability and reasonable travel time.
Tetouan is a smaller airport, but it’s even closer to Ketama. The trip by car or taxi takes about 3 hours, while shared taxis often take 3–4 hours.
Although flight options are more limited compared to Tangier, Tetouan is ideal for travelers who find a direct route or prefer a quieter entry into Morocco.
If proximity is your priority, Al Hoceima is one of the best airports for Ketama. From here, it’s only 2.5–3 hours by car or taxi.
Public buses are less frequent, often requiring a change in Issaguen, which can extend the journey to 3.5–5 hours. Still, for travelers who can book a flight into Al Hoceima, this is the most direct and comfortable option.
Fes is a popular entry point, particularly for budget travelers. Many low-cost airlines connect Fes with European cities, making it an affordable option.
The journey from Fes to Ketama takes about 5–6 hours by car or taxi, and 6–7 hours by bus. While not the closest, Fes strikes a good balance between flight prices and accessibility.
Casablanca is Morocco’s largest and busiest airport, offering the widest range of international flights. For travelers coming from outside Europe, this is often the most practical entry point.
However, it is the farthest from Ketama. By road, the trip takes 10–12 hours. A smarter option is to fly into Casablanca, then book a short domestic flight to Tangier, Fes, or Al Hoceima before continuing by road.
Marrakech is Morocco’s most famous tourist hub, but for Ketama travelers it is also the most distant. Driving directly from Marrakech to Ketama takes 12–14 hours, making it a challenging journey.
The better option is to enjoy Marrakech as part of your itinerary, then catch a domestic flight north to Tangier, Tetouan, or Fes before heading into the Rif.
The best airport depends on your priorities:
No matter where you land, the journey through Morocco is part of the adventure. Expect winding mountain roads, scenic landscapes, and plenty of opportunities to stop in charming towns along the way.
