The Clean Ketama Project is the first social initiative launched by Visit Ketama. Our mission is to protect the beauty of Morocco’s Rif Mountains, improve daily life for local communities, and inspire responsible tourism that benefits both people and the environment.
Ketama is a place of breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and deep traditions. For decades, visitors have been drawn to its mountains, valleys, and villages. However, with increasing numbers of travelers, waste management has become a growing challenge. Plastic bottles left by the roadside, food wrappers scattered along hiking trails, and household waste in public spaces all contribute to pollution that affects the natural beauty of the Rif and the well-being of local residents.
While the region offers unforgettable experiences, the environmental strain is visible. Tourism, when unmanaged, can overwhelm small communities without proper waste infrastructure. Locals are often left with the responsibility of managing waste without sufficient resources, and the result is an issue that impacts both quality of life and the reputation of Ketama as a destination.
The Clean Ketama Project was created to respond to these challenges. It is not only a clean-up program, but also a long-term community effort to improve waste management and promote awareness.
Regular clean-up events are organized in villages, along roads, and in nature trails. These efforts bring together volunteers, residents, and travelers. By participating, visitors become part of a shared responsibility to protect the region.
True change begins with knowledge. Clean Ketama partners with schools and local associations to teach children and young people about recycling, reducing plastic use, and caring for their environment. This helps build a new generation of eco-conscious citizens.
The project collaborates with municipalities, NGOs, and tourism operators to ensure waste is not only collected but properly managed. The goal is to connect short-term action (clean-ups) with long-term systems such as recycling stations, municipal support, and community-led waste management.
Travelers are encouraged to join clean-up events during their stay or contribute by donating supplies, such as gloves, bags, or bins. By involving tourists directly, the project creates a culture of responsible travel where every visitor leaves a positive footprint.
The impact of the Clean Ketama Project goes beyond the physical act of cleaning. It creates new opportunities for local pride, fosters social cohesion, and strengthens tourism. Cleaner streets and trails mean healthier living conditions, safer spaces for children, and a better image for the region internationally.
A clean and welcoming Ketama also benefits the tourism sector. Visitors are more likely to stay longer, recommend the region to others, and support businesses when they experience a safe, clean, and organized environment. This directly contributes to the local economy and ensures that communities receive tangible benefits from tourism.
The Clean Ketama Project aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
By connecting with global goals, the project shows that local action can have international significance.
There are many ways to support the Clean Ketama Project:
Every small action adds up. By working together, locals and visitors can create lasting change.
The Clean Ketama Project is just the beginning of Visit Ketama’s long-term vision. Future initiatives will expand into environmental education, eco-tourism, and community development projects. But Clean Ketama will always stand as the first step—a symbol of what is possible when communities, travelers, and organizations unite for a shared cause.
The Clean Ketama Project demonstrates that tourism can be a force for good. By tackling waste, building awareness, and inspiring responsibility, we can ensure that Ketama remains a place of beauty, culture, and pride. Together, we can make the Rif Mountains not only a destination to visit, but a region where sustainable tourism and community well-being go hand in hand.
